Roy Thatcher is an accomplished jazz and rock guitarist and plays throughout Chicago and the Western suburbs in The Grand Avenue Big Band.

His band has been featured on WGN-TV and appears on YouTube.

Born in Melrose Park, Illinois, Roy enjoyed listening to big band music with his dad.  Music always filled the house…. his uncle played the guitar, his mother was a singer and his aunt, Nancy Thatcher, was a violinist for the LaGrange Symphony.

Roy himself has played with jazz notables like violinist Johnny Frigo, jazz vocalist and guitarist Frank D'Rone and blues vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells.

Roy says his favorite jobs are “any night when the band sounds good.”

Roy majored in Education at the College of DuPage.  He tells his students to “give your all when you play but don’t interfere with somebody else.”

His students have taken that advice and many have gone on to study music in college.

Roy has been teaching guitar and bass guitar for over two decades.
